Indomobil's Car Sales to Drop 20 Pct

VIVAnews - PT Indomobil Sukses International Tbk. (IMAS) figured that the company's car sales would fall 20 percent in the first semester of 2009 compared to the same period of 2008.

The decrease was due to the fluctuating rupiah against US dollar as well as the increase in bank's interest rate after the global economic downturn.

Indomobil Sukses Makmur Managing Director Gunadi Sindhuwinata said there has been a decline in the people's purchasing power since the end of 2008. It is predicted that the decrease will continue until the end of the first semester of 2009.

"The national car sales drop by 26 percent," he said in Jakarta on Monday, June 15.

He expected that car sales in the second semester of 2009 will improve by virtue of the cut BI Rate, which would in any way trigger the cut in banks' interest rate.

"Our company has also issued bonds," he said further.

However, Gunardi said the 2009 targeted sales of 420-444,000 units are still lower than 2008's 603,000 units.
