Is Indonesia's Yogyakarta Terrorist Hub?

VIVAnews - Indonesia's Special Region of Yogyakarta is listed one among 14 other places in the country in terms of training centers of Islamic hardliners.

An observer on terrorism from Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, Najib Azca, said, "[Yogyakarta] is indeed one of the hubs. They have it all here: HTI (Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia), Salafi, Majelis Mujahidin."

A few number of the existing groups have allegedly adopted the ideology of terrorism. "It's a really small groups of people. There's group within a group."

Nonetheless, he believes that despite the size, the groups are still capable of launching attacks.

Najib on the other hand underlines an issue that not all the fundamentalists can be suspected terrorists.

Given the circumstance, spokesperson of Yogyakarta Police Department Adj. Comm. Anny Pujiastuti said, "We're partnering with local security forces and inhabitants in every hamlet to raise awareness."
