VIVAnews – National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) Head Ifdhal Kasim said his institution was conducting investigation into the unrest in Ambon on Sunday.

"We are looking into the case and we're demanding that security measure is carried out in the area," Ifdhal told VIVAnews.

The Ambon riot was sparked by the death of a motorcycle taxi driver named Darfin Saimen. In fact, according to police, Darfin was killed because of a traffic accident. The police are probing into a dissemination of serial SMS which had allegedly triggered the Ambon clash.

The government, according to Ifdhal, must prompt an approach which prioritizes peace. "Hence, the investigation should be thorough as well, so that it won’t be puzzling, or causing anxiety in the society," he said.

He said also hopes that the Ambonese people not falling for provocations brought forth by certain parties attempting to go over again the 1999 tragedy. "We must learn from the past to anticipate such event from happening in the future," said the head of Komnas HAM.
