VIVAnews - The Salemba penitentiary in Jakarta is now under the spotlight following a video showcasing illicit practices provided in the prison.

Ministry of Justice and Human Rights is probing into the issue.

The ministry's spokesperson, Murdianto, said the video recording in circulation depicts the past times of the Salemba penitentiary. It was revealed that the video was taken in 2008.

According to him, the investigation team will be making reports on any unlawful practice found in the Salemba penitentiary. "If prostitution really takes place in the Salemba penitentiary, we'll look into it," he said.

Earlier, former Salemba inmate, Syarifuddin S. Pane, uncovered stories on life inside the Salemba penitentiary. He used his mobile phone cam to record anything that caught his attention such as a Rp30 million special room and prostitution.

The East Jakarta resident was put behind Salemba bars in 2008 for four months under document forgery charge.
