VIVAnews - The Supreme Court approved a judicial review that Time Inc Asia proposed. Time's lawyer Todung Mulya Lubis stated that the decision will benefit the press in Indonesia.

"Thank God. The Indonesia's press is facing various obstacles concerning criminalization against the press," Lubis told VIVAnes on Thursday, April 16.

The court's verdict, he said, is a positive result for the freedom of the press. News coverage, he said, should have not been considered as having negative intention. "News production cannot be categorized as a crime," he said.

According to Lubis, the international community will appreciate Indonesia. "It is not easy for the press to deal with the legal system in Indonesia. However, the decision will guarantee the freedom of the press," he said.

Thursday, April 16, the Supreme Court stated that Time would not have to pay Rp 1 trillion to former Indonesian president Soeharto.

The board of judges handling the case included Harifin A Tumpa, Hatta Ali, and Hakim Nyak Pa.

Hatta Ali said the board of judges weighed that Time did not act against the law. "The news item that Time magazine covered still obeys the press' code of conduct," he said.
