Japan Airlines Catches Fire at Haneda Airport, 379 Evacuated

Tokyo – A Japan Airlines plane burned on the runway of Haneda Airport in Tokyo, Japan. The plane was carrying 379 passengers and crew. The commercial aircraft collided with a Japan Coast Guard plane on Tuesday evening local time, January 2, 2024.

Live footage on public broadcaster NHK showed flames coming out of the plane's windows and the plane engulfed in flames at 6:30 p.m local time.

A Japan Airlines spokesperson said that flight number 516, an Airbus A-350, which originated from Shin-Chitose airport in Hokkaido, was carrying 367 passengers and 12 crew members.

According to Japan Today, the plane landed at 5:47 p.m. local time and caught fire after its left wing hit a coast guard plane.

All passengers on the JAL plane were successfully evacuated and there were no fatalities. Meanwhile, five of the six crew members of the MA-722 coast guard plane are still missing.
