VIVAnews - Two mountains in Indonesia are still on alert status in the beginning of 2010.
The Head of Vulcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVG), Surono said there was not any increased activity in the mountains.
Surono also said the level status of both volcanoes were determined based on the results of analysis and visual observations by local volcano observers. The earthquake status analyzed includes volcanic and tectonic earthquakes as well as tremors followed by visual observations.
“Visual observations were also performed to support the analysis of earthquake status,” he said as reported by the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources on Wednesday, January 6.
Although there was not any escalation in the activities, Surono asked the locals to be cautious of hot clouds, lava flow and excess materials which could strike anytime.
The locals were also asked to establish communication and follow all regulations set by the Regional Disaster Mitigation Unit (Satlak PB), the Provincial Coordinating Disaster Mitigation Unit (Satkorlak PBP) and the Vulcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center via local Volcano Observation Station.
Especially for Mount Ibu, Surono said people did not need to be worried about issues on eruptions.
“The locals and visitors are not allowed to hike and get near to Mount Ibu within 2 kilometers away from the crater,” he said.
In case of dust rain, people are advised to wear masks to avoid breathing disorders.
“Dust rain could destroy plants. But, within the next 1 or 2 years, it may fertilize them,” Surono said.
