VIVAnews - 125 thousand imported sugar will be flooding Indonesia in February 2010, considering the volume this month reaching 100 thousand tons.
The government has approved on the white crystal sugar import of 500 thousand tons to meet with the sugar demand until the on-season comes.
"The supply of sugar will suffice," said Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu on Wednesday, Jan 20.
257 thousand tons of imported sugar will enter in March and April. Up to December 2009, sugar stock reached 352,852 tons.
Mari acknowledged the national sugar price has went up to, "10.77 percent compared to December 2009."
She claimed that all sugar factories would not process sugar canes until May of 2010, which is categorized off-season period.
On the other hand, she said the progress in the international sugar prices have helped increase prices of domestic sugar. For the time being, the international sugar price has reached US$720 per metric tons.
"This has been the highest price in the last two decades since 1989," she stressed.
