Japan Aids C Jakarta in Waste Management

VIVAnews - The Central Jakarta administration has teamed up with Japan’s Kitakyushu City Council to overcome with chronically increasing waste issues in Jakarta. Today, January 27, six Kitakyushu officials visited the Central Jakarta government.

Kitakyushu delegations are led by Mr. Nagaishi accompanied by Professor Takakura, the inventor of Takakura waste management technology, and two Japanese representatives. The group was welcomed by Central Jakarta Development and Environment Assistant, H Tihang Helmi and the Head of Environment Agency, Abdul Malik.

The cooperation was based on Kitakyushu City Council’s success in waste management which was resulted in 20 percent reduction of the amount of waste that must be disposed to the final dumping spot (TPA). Kitakyushu was even dubbed one of the cities with the best waste management. The success was due to Takakura basket method implemented in Kitakyusha.

Seventy kilometer square-wide Kitakyushu is one of the cities in Japan with more than 1 million people. The volume of waste in the city reaches 400 thousand tons per year. Aside from Central Jakarta, five other cities in the world have established collaboration with Kitakyushu.

According to Helmi, Takakura basket method, which was invented by Professor Takakura, is actually a recycled garbage management and composting technology by involving the society.  The technology has started to be implemented in Central Jakarta in a pilot project conducted in a final dumping spot in Rawasari village, Cempaka Putih sub district.

“The composting and recycle technology has actually been applied to several houses in some subdistricts and more macro pilot projects in Rawasari dumping spot,” Helmi said. “But, it hasn’t been implemented in the entire 44 villages. It is expected that the collaboration with Japan would be able to improve waste management in Central Jakarta and the volume of garbage disposed to the final dumping spot will be decreased by at least 20 percent”.

Helmi also said the results of the meeting will first be reported to the Mayor to be passed on to the Governor. Following approval from Jakarta regional government, a better prepared plan will be made.

The average volume of waste in Central Jakarta reached 5.280 meter cubic per day. That does not include trashes coming from rivers and parks.

“This joint program actually tends to focus on the management pilot project. We still don’t know how far it will go. First, we’ll inform the Mayor about the program, which will be forwarded to the Governor. After it is approved, we’ll probably apply it gradually from 2011 to 2012,” Helmi said.
