VIVAnews- Indonesia would likely have smaller opportunity to host the 2022 World Cup due to the government’s refusal to prompt support to the Indonesian Soccer Association (PSSI), which is one of the requirements to be included in the bidding process.
According to the Coordinating Minister for People’s Welfare, Agung Laksono, the government is still currently focusing on stepping up the performance of the national team. Further analysis as to hosting the 2022 World Cup is for the time being the utmost concern.
“We’re still concentrating on developing the national team,” Laksono told reporters at the State Palace on Thursday, February 11.
He also said the government has sent a letter to FIFA and PSSI declaring its stance on the matter. The government also writes in the letter that they are still looking into the plan to be the World Cup host.
PSSI puts Indonesia in the candidacy towards becoming the host of the 2022 World Cup. In the bidding process, Indonesia will be competing against other 7 candidates which are Qatar, England, Australia, Japan, United States, Korea and Russia.
Meanwhile, other jointly-running candidates include Spain-Portugal and Mexico-Belgium-Netherland. One of US major states, Los Angeles will also join the bidding process. The bidding is planned to be conducted in December, 2010.
To be considered in the process, FIFA requires every candidate to submit a proof of support from their governments. Indonesia was given a time until Tuesday, February 9.
“It needs a proper preparation. So we can’t. We need more time to conduct the analysis,” Laksono said, responding to the overdue deadline on the supporting letter.
“We may say yes in the future,” he added.
