MDB Eyeing 8 Pct Newmont Shares

VIVAnews - PT Multi Daerah Bersaing (MDB) is intended to own 8 percent of PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara’s shares that are taken on by PT Fukuafu. It has been reported that PT Fukuafu will release 10 percent of its shares.

Therefore, PT MDB is interested to increase its share ownership in the mining company located in West Sumbawa. Meanwhile, 2 percent of Fukuafu of shares have been paid for PT Investama Emas.

PT MDB Director Ihsan Gemala Putra said his company was taking an approach to obtain the shares.

According to him, the motivation behind the share taking is a good intention to improve the condition of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). “In the end, it’s all for the people of NTB. We’re still probing into it,” Ihsan told reporters in Mataram on February 24.

As commonly known, PT MDB, which is a consortium company between NTB local government and PT Multicapital (Bumi Resource’s subsidiary), has taken on 17 percent of Newmont’s shares.

The company is even planning to pay for 7 percent of share divestment in 2009, which is worth IDR2.5 trillion. Hence, there are four companies owning the shares of PT NNT, which are PT MDB by 24 percent, Fukuafu by 20 percent, and Newmont and NTMC Sumitomo by 49 percent.

Ihsan said the increase in share ownership aims to enhance PT MDB’s role in the company’s management. Besides Fukuafu’s shares, MDB is also ready to buy 7 percent of share divestment in 2010, which will be released from March to August.

So far, PT MDB has managed to take on 24 percent of the shares which enables it to assign a director and a commissioner.

“We’ll keep trying to give the best to the people of NTB. If we could obtain additional shares, at least our roles in the mining company will get more significant,” he said.
