VIVAnews - Following in the steps of Jember, which hosted the ‘Jember Fashion Carnival’, Central Java’s Solo is holding Solo Batik Carnival (SBC) today, June 23. The event will likely resemble the famous Rio de Janeiro carnival in Brazil.
Three hundred and sixty one participants will be participating in the parade wearing distinguished batik costumes accompanied by music from percussion instruments. The third SBC will also adopt Sekar Jagad costumes as the theme.
Solo Cultural and Tourism Agency Head Purnomo Subagyo said the parade will start at Solo Center Point Purwosari, crossing Jalan Slamet Riyadi and meet its end at traditional market Ngarsapura.
“The participants will depart at 3 PM,” Subagyo said in Solo.
This year’s SBC costumes were used at the Chingay parade in Singapore and several ‘batik waste’ costumes were exhibited in Netherland.
The event coordinator Hery Mattaya explained that Sekar Jagad was chosen as the theme to symbolize environmental preservation.
“Unlike last year’s parade, which borrowed the theme of mask, this year the costumes will definitely be more colorful,” Mattaya said.
He went on by saying that seven music stages will be set up on Purwosari junction up until Ngarsapura to entertain thousands of Solo residents who will be seeing the carnival.
Due to the event’s date that coincides with the Asia Pacific Housing Ministers Meeting (AMPCHUD), which will take place in Solo from June 22 to 24, the participants of the meeting will also take part in the parade on carriages.
“We’ve prepared fifteen golden carriages to carry the delegations. The committees have even asked them to bring traditional clothing from their countries”.
