VIVAnews - Indonesia’s low competitiveness and feeble national economy have prompted a warning and an idea from the House of Representatives (DPR) to create a State Economy Bill, which has been a discussion topic among the members.
DPR’s Budgeting Committee Head Harry Azhar Aziz said the particular bill has not been passed into a draft. “However, looking at equitable development and the results with other countries, the bill is probably necessary,” he said at the Megawati Institute in Jakarta on Wednesday, June 30.
Commission XI member, who is also the institute’s executive director Arif Budimanta was concerned after he visited other Asian countries.
“We’re concerned about the economy and the politics. Back in the 60s, we used to be better or equal with other countries in the region, even with Japan and South Korea,” Budimanta said, adding that the GDP per capita was the indicator.
Nowadays, those countries are far ahead Indonesia in terms of the economy and the human development index.
“We’re far behind Malaysia. They used to learn from us and now, they’re the one who’s successfully implementing it. The same thing applies to Singapore”.
Thus, Aziz continues, a new measurement is required aside from macro and policy successes.
“I’ve always insisted of including unemployment and poverty in the budgets. The government’s achievement can be determined by rates in those two sectors. We’ve also been asking for the human development index like health and education to be put in,” he said.
“If necessary, include them in the bill, so we can get a clear picture of the economic management”.
