VIVAnews - The Jakarta administration is targeting that the annual flooding in the Indonesian capital would be reduced by 40 percent by 2011.

Jakarta governor Fauzi Bowo stated yesterday that the targeted flood alleviation of 40 percent would be materialized by, among any others, dredging 13 main rivers and 56 canals.

Following the river-dredging schemes, the Jakarta administration will also build a water tunnel linking East Flood Canal and West Flood Canal.

He emphasized total efforts in dealing with floodwaters by outlining integrated plan in river maintenance, dike construction, river and drainage management, and pump development to channel water to the sea. He also said that the attempts to minimize floodwaters will be effective if the inhabitants of Jakarta team up well with the government.

"We have always invited people to avoid littering as an anticipation to floodwaters," said the Jakarta governor.
