Senior Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia Darmin Nasution said the low cumulative credit growth up until June was due to the cycle that is similar to last year.

“Last year, the credit growth rose in late 2009, which made it high until it reached 18.6 percent although it was long between January and October,” Nasution said at Bank Indonesia office on Monday, July 5.

The significant credit growth, according to him, suggests banking intermediation that is also getting better. BI believes this year’s growth could reach 22-24 percent until the end of the year.

BI Deputy Governor Muliaman D Hadad said the increase in the credit growth was mainly triggered by the faith of economic executors in the economic prospect.

Hadad goes on by saying that meetings with several banks have resulted in an intention to change the tendency of credit growth into going up.

Meanwhile, BI has also accounted Rp 479.1 trillion of undisbursed loans that consist of committed loans of Rp 142.4 trillion and Rp 336.7 trillion worth of uncommitted loans until May.

BI will always observe the condition of banking sector and encourage the improvement of banking efficiency in order to constantly optimize the intermediation function.
