VIVAnews - PT New Nusa Tenggara, together with West Sumbawa Regency Government, have put 150 coral reefs on the waters of Kenawa Island, Tano sub district, West Sumbawa regency on Tuesday, July 6.

The 13 acres-wide Kenawa Island is one of tourist destinations in Indonesia and has become a haven for visitors for years.

PT NNT External Relations Senior Manager Arif Perdanakusuma said the placement of the corals around the Batu Hijau waters had proven to be effective in restoring the condition of the reefs because marine animals quickly grow on the artificial rocks.

“This is part of the government’s program to make Kenawa Island a marine tourism site and a marine research center,” Perdanakusuma told reporters in West Sumbawa.

At the same event, 150 hatchlings were released to the sea and conditioning trees were planted. West Sumbawa Regent Kiyai Haji Zulkifli Muhadli and several PT NNT officials, such as Public Relations Manager Kasan Mulyono, also attended the event.

Perdanakusuma also explained that PT NNT had earlier established more than 1000 artificial coral reefs, otherwise known as reef balls, on Benete waters in Maluk sub district and Sekongkang sub district’s Lawar waters.

The coral reef ecosystem is considered important to the lives of the people, both economically and environmentally. The reefs are the places where various types of fish and sea biota, which are the sources of protein for human.

Environment-wise, the coral reefs serve as the protector of coastal areas from abrasions caused by the waves.
