VIVAnews - Shirley Shackleton, the widow of Greg Shackleton—one of the Australian journalists killed in Balibo, East Timor (now Timor Leste), testified in East Jakarta Administration Court.
According to the Alliance of Indonesian Journalists Attorney Sholeh Ali, Shirley said there was truly a murder of five Australian journalists in Balibo during the East Timor liberation mission by the Indonesian military.
Ali said Shirley’s testimony had supported the statement of Balibo Five film director, saying that the movie was made based on the facts revealed in the Australian Court.
“The facts were obtained from researches, including on sixty books, interviews with Balibo people and investigations in the Australian Court,” Ali told VIVAnews on Thursday, July 8.
He also pointed out that Shirley’s argument rebutted the reason the Film Censorship Body (LSF) used to ban the movie, which is considered a fiction.
“Fictions must be fought with facts. That’s what Miss Shirley was trying to do, explaining that the five journalists were murdered in the conflict,” Ali said.
Shirley even reportedly corresponded with the movie’s director who said Balibo Five was created according to the facts gathered in the trials.
The court committee Diana said the trial was the tenth one with the agenda of testimony hearing by opposing witnesses. “The next trial, which is about the conclusion, will be on July 22”, she said.
Balibo is part of the dark history on Indonesian invasion to Timor Leste. Various testimonies and documents suggest the involvement of Indonesian troops and pro-Indonesia Timor Leste military in the killing of five Australian journalists: Gary Cunningham, Malcolm Rennie, Greg Shackleton, Tony Stewart and Brian Peters. Indonesia, however, denied the accusation.
