VIVAnews - Schools with international standards in Jakarta will be subjected to evaluations. The decision is based on the consideration that the existence of the schools is against the state-funded free education program through school operational assistance program (BOS) and education operational assistance program (BOP).

“The international schools will be evaluated after the enrollment process for new students is done,” Jakarta Education Agency Head Taufik Yudi Mulyanto said on Monday, June 12.

Based on the data obtained by the agency, international schools have been established in the entire level of education. There are currently seven elementary schools, nine junior high schools, ten high schools and 14 vocational schools.

According to Mulyanto, the evaluation was demanded by the people while the issue on online enrollment process was occurring a while ago.

The evaluation will consist of recruitment, funding, management and academic results. “The education agency will compare international schools with the regular ones,” he said.

Among the targets the evaluation wishes to achieve is consistent funding to prevent controversy that always arises in every student registration period.

The funding will be adjusted to the condition of the schools considering each school has different capabilities while the amount of fees that have to be paid by the students’ parents depend on the schools’ management.

The evaluation also aims to adjust the condition to available resources. If great number of teachers are found unprepared, the evaluation will not be forced, just like the regulation that requires teachers to be able to speak foreign languages.

“The results of the evaluation will be one of the considered items to be included in the revised Governor Decree no 8/2006 on Education,” he said, adding that the decree has been in effect for almost five years.

Together with other educational issues that require perfection, the evaluation will be one of the sub discussion topics in the revised decree.

“The National Education Ministry requires every region to have schools with international standards. The local regulation, I don’t really know”.

Jakarta governor Fauzi Bowo said earlier that the funding issue was highly publicized not because of the absence of clear regulations.

Before a prospective students signs up to a school, the whole mechanism, along with the amount of fees payable, will be informed to the parents. That means, it is inappropriate to say that international schools are tricky.

“I’m waiting for the education agency for the next policy. But basically, students enrolling to international schools have known beforehand about the terms and condition. If they aren’t able to get in, it’ll be okay with them because there are a lot of other choices,” Bowo said.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Education M Nuh also said he would write a new regulation on international schools.  According to the plan, the new policy will be issued in August. There are four items that will be considered in the issuance, which are resources availability, recruitment process, facility adequacy and accountability. Due to the deteriorating achievements of international schools, the Ministry of Education has revoked the statuses of eight international junior high schools, two international high schools and eight international vocational schools.
