VIVAnews - The wide courtyard of Javanese Christian Church (GKJ) of Manahan, Solo, was in the past during the Ramadhan often packed with people. Everyone was busy making up the tables. Meals were displayed at the front yard. It was a routine that the church board had to handle during the fasting month of Ramadhan aimed the Muslims.
There was no free meals, for those willing to have some food had to pay for Rp 500 per person.
The usual comers were those of pedicab drivers, hawkers, carpenters, and masons. In fact, passers by would also join the crowd.
The menu might vary from nasi soto, curry, soup and timlo.
However, the unusual event is now history.
The reason behind this is that an Islamic mass organization called Ukhuwah Islamiyah Forum for Surakarta Muslim Element shut down the event and ban the Manahan Church to provide food for the Muslims prior to breaking the Ramadhan fast.
In a statement, they believed that Ramadhan fasting only applies for Muslims, including to breaking the Ramadhan fast. The organization urged Surakarta Police Chief to stop the event.
However, Reverend Retno Ratih Suryaning Handayani said disappointment was not on her side. In fact, she claimed that the event can improve talks with other religious followers.
"This is part of inter-faith activities occurred amongst the grass root," Reverend Retno told VIVAnews.
