People Should Reduce Rice Consumption: Govt

VIVAnews - Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Bayu Krisnamurthi, said a day-without-rice campaign is only a suggestion because of the high rice consumption in Indonesia today.

According to Bayu, rice consumption per capita in Indonesia reaches 139 kg per year, which is considered highest in the world especially if it is compared to Japan (70 kg per capita) and China (90-100 kg per kapita).

If a person can avoid consuming rice a day in a year, he said, state may save rice to 100 thousand tonnes. If it is carried out a day in one month, yearly save on rice would be around 1.2 million tonnes.

In the advice, rice should be replaced by either cassava or tuber.
