VIVAnews - Indonesian Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) said in statement that the mob attack against Muslims of Ahmadiyah in Cikeusik, Pandeglang, Banten, was organized.
"There are hardliners who despise the Ahmadiyah sect," Kontras activist Syafiq Alielha said in Jakarta. However, Syafiq refused to name the alleged group. "The incident was likely set up," he said.
Coordinator of Kontras Working Committee, Haris Azhar, told reporters about the incident.
On Sunday, Feb 6, the mob of around 500 people attacked a house in which members of Ahmadiyah used to gather in Umbulan Village, Cikeusik Subdistrict, Pandeglang Regency, at 10 am.
Earlier on Saturday, police came to arrest Suparman, Cleric of Ahmadiyah of Pandeglang, Suparman's wife, and Tatep, Chief of Pemuda Ahmadiyah, the sect's youth organization.
Police escorted them to Pandeglang Police Station for questioning session on the issue of the nationality of Suparman's wife. Up until today, the three members of Ahmadiyah are still at the police station.
The arrest led to displacement of 25 Ahmadiyah members in Cikeusik to Suparman's house.
Given the fact, the youths of Ahmadiyah from Jakarta and Serang headed toward Cikeusik to secure the Cikeusik Ahmadiyah members.
The backup were then on guard at Suparman's house.
Later that day, six policemen of the Pandeglang Crime and Investigation Division arrived at 9 am. They had breakfast and making conversations. Police asked the people to leave the house.
The request was declined by the Ahmadiyah members. Before long, the police left the spot.
Hundreds of people afterwards stormed the house from north direction. They shouted at the guarding Ahmadiyah members and showed their machetes off.
As they were approaching the house, an Ahmadiyah member named Deden Sujana tried to calm the crowd down. Yet, the masses refused to obey the persuasion.
More people circled the house from behind. The total attackers were around 1,500 people.
Three Ahmadiyah members were killed during the incident.
