VIVAnews - Central Committee of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) made a statement on the series of acts of violence committed against certain religious believers within the last two weeks. Chairman of PBNU Cleric Sahal Mahfudz said different beliefs must not incite religious intolerance. Nahdlatul Ulama is the largest Muslim group in Indonesia.

PBNU condemn violent acts set out in Cikeusik, Temanggung and Pasuruan. "Secondly, teachings about the prophetic figure of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad that the Ahmadis hold tight are not in line with Ahlussunnah Wal Jamaah," Cleric Sahal told VIVAnews through a written statement today, Feb 17.

Nonetheless, violent acts are not justifiable to be committed against members of religious beliefs at odds. PBNU therefore urge every NU member to hold supreme the idea of national companionship.

PBNU also demand the government to carry out its constitutional obligations toward all citizens of Indonesia without having to discriminate their faith and religion.

Within the past two weeks, three violent acts having their grounds on religious intolerance have taken place in three different provinces. The first attack occurred in Cikeusik, Banten, on Feb 6, killing three Ahmadi members. The second riot hit Temanggung on Feb 8, damaging churces and a school. Recently, on Feb 15, a Shia Islamic Boarding School in Pasuruan was subject to stone throwing.
