Indonesia VP Wants Reversal Principle Applied

VIVAnews - Indonesian Vice President Boediono said the corruption case which involves former mid-ranking tax official Gayus Tambunan may apply reversal of the burden of proof under the Indonesian governing law.

"We'll be implementing the reversal of the burden of proof principle under any [Indonesian] applicable law," said Boediono today, Feb 24.

Gayus Tambunan earlier worked at the Directorate of Tax Objection and Appeals. He was found guilty of committing corruption and sentenced to seven years of imprisonment. 

Boediono explained that the reversal of the burden of proof principle is expected to enabling state to earn compensation of losses inflicted by the convict.

Attorney General Basrief Arief stressed the reversal of the burden of proof principle with Law No.8/2010 on Money Laundering Crime. With regard to article 77 of Money Laundering Crime, the convict will be sought to tell before the court about his or her wealth.

Basrief also said the measure had been taken on a case having Bahasyim Assifie as the defendant. Bahasyim Assifie was a high ranking official at the Directorate General of Taxes. He was found guilty of committing corruption and money laundering. The court seized Bahasyim's weatlt, which is worth Rp66 billion.

Chief of the Indonesian Police Gen. Timur Pradopo said the reversal of the burden of proof principle will be applied against the convict as regards Law on Money Laundering Crime.

The Indonesian Vice President is called for under Presidential Decree No.1/2011 on Gayus Tambunan case to monitor the convict's case.
