VIVAnews - Around 28,000 hectares out of the total 83,064 hectares of Tesso Nilo National Park have been deforested and are now dealing with land degradation.

The damage is a result of illegal land use inflicted by the locals as oil palm plantation and illegal logging are most common in the area.

As a result, the authorities of Tesso Nilo National Park have decided to activate forest patrols in pursuit of better protection toward the forest.

"We're trying to bring into life joint patrols which involve NGOs and those companies who hold forest concession rights in Tesso Nilo," Chief of Tesso Nilo National Park Agency, Hayani Suprahman, told VIVAnews.

Hayani said the joint patrol, called the Tesso Nilo Team, was commenced in 2007. Unfortunately, the team was shut down two years after its launch.

Meanwhile, Syamsidar, a spokesperson of WWF Riau, said regular counseling over the locals about particular issues on forest sustainability has been neatly scheduled.

"It is important that companies sign in to joint patrol in an attempt to preserve Tesso Nilo," Hayani said.

According to Forestry Ministry, Tesso Nilo National Park is home to 360 species of plants. The area was set up a national park on July 19, 2004 at 38,576 hectares of land. In 2009, the government extended the area to 83,064 hectares in 2009.
