VIVAnews - A Papua-based journalist, Banjir Ambarita, was stabbed in his chest and stomach by an unidentified person on Thursday, March 3, at around 1 am local time. Banjir is a news contributor for Jakarta-based online media VIVAnews and news daily The Jakarta Globe.

Head of Jayapura Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) Viktor Mambor said in a statement that prior to the violent attempt, a motorbike approached as he was driving his motorbike before Jayapura Mayoral building on his way home.

All at once, the motorbike intercepted Banjir. "Bram was stabbed from the back. He received two wounds on his stomach and chest, three centimeters and one centimeters in length respectively," said Viktor yesterday.

The two perpetrators escaped the crime scene seconds after. Banjir, being seriously injured, made phone calls to his friends including a member of AJI Jayapura, Cunding Levi. "Someone has just stabbed me," said Banjir as quoted by Cunding.

According to Viktor, Bram, Banjir's nickname, was shortly transported to Army Hospital Marthen Indey in Aryoko, Jayapura. "The doctor said Bram's wounds can be handled at once," Viktor told VIVAnews.

Viktor said Bram wrote about a sexual harassment case attempted by three members of Jayapura Police Department toward a female inmate last month. Chief of Jayapura Police Department Adj. Chief. Comm. Imam Setiawan announced his resignation from his office by virtue of the case.
