VIVAnews - Chief of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) Central Board, Taufik Kiemas, declined to reveal topics discussed during a meeting with Chairman of the National Mandate Party, Hatta Radjasa.
A question was posed to Kiemas about the future possibility of PDIP to coalesce with the ruling party. "In Indonesia, there is no opposition system. It won't change anything whether or not we're joining [the ruling party]," said Kiemas.
This is quite against the principle held strongly by Megawati Soekarno Putri of which party has been the opposition of the authorities.
"I'm already old, 70 years of age. You have to ask Puan. If I make the decision, I could not possibly survive until [the 2014 elections]," said Kiemas today, March 3.
Rumors have emerged suggesting the meeting was held to propose a coalition between the ruling Democratic Party and PDI-P, following warming relations between the two former arch-enemies.
Many have said the Democratic Party and PDIP are close to forming a deal on the heels of deepening rifts with two of the party’s existing coalition partners, the Golkar Party and Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), which sided with the opposition in a recent important House vote.
