VIVAnews - 13 people were killed after flash flood hit Tangse Subdistrict, Pidie Regency, Aceh. Five villages are seriously devastated and the main access roads are cut. Mulyadi, an enronmentalist, claimed that more than 100 homes were damaged and four bridges collapsed. Dozens of victims are likely buried beneath the mud and logs which swept away by the water.
"This is much worse than [the flash flood] in Papua. Logs cover the roads and thumo homes," he said today, March 11. The flood pounded Pidie on Thursday night at around 8 PM.
Today, people still comb through the most affected area in search of the victims. More bodies are found deposited under accumulated logs. "Areas that have been hit hard by the flood include Peunalom I, Peunalom II, Layan, some parts of Pulo Baro and Blang Dalam," said Mulyadi.
Several health centers are also ruined by the disaster.
Pidie Deputy Regent, Nazir Adam, said in a statement that the losses from the flood may reach billions of rupiah.
Tangse Forest has been set as a section of Ulu Masen conservation area. Illegal logging is believed the sole trigger of the massive flash flood.
