VIVAnews - Muhammad Salim, translator of oldest and longest epic in the world preceding Mahabharata of India, Surek Galigo, or, as it is notably called, La Galigo, died at 75, on Sunday, March 27.

La Galigo is originated from South Sulawesi, and is written in the Indonesian language Bugisnese. It has become known to a wider audience mostly through the theatrical adaptation I La Galigo by Robert Wilson.

The poem is composed in pentameters and relates the story of humanity's origins but serves also as practical everyday almanac. The narrative centers to a protagonist called I La Galigo, the son of Sawerigading, ruler of the middle earth.

UNESCO has named the work as Memory of the World earlier this year.

Salim passed away at his home around 7 p.m prior to saying Maghrib prayer. "After making wudu, dad suddenly felt pain in his chest," said Jamiah, his wife. The man then went to his bed. Five minutes later, he was gone.

He was taken and buried at the family's burial ground in Allakuang Village, Sidrap Regency, 180 kilometers away from Makassar.
