VIVAnews – President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said he is fully aware of frequent violations against human rights committed in Indonesia. “Human Rights violations are still around, committed in various places at any time,” said Yudhoyono.

Yudhoyono indicated a point which is at times hinted in the international fora with regard to human rights violations. "Indonesia has always been target of questioning. [However], the situation has systematically changed,” said Yudhoyono. In fact, Indonesia has been elected as member of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Not only that, Human Rights condition in Indonesia has greatly changed compared to the situation around 10-15 years ago. "We will make things right," he said.

Concerning the unsolved cases on Human Rights violations, Yudhoyono demands everyone seek the best solutions for the problem. “I used to go to Aceh as well as Poso, Ambon, in search of certain answers for stable peace,” he said.

Earlier, a number of Human Rights activists and observers voiced concerns over unclear processes of human rights cases. The government is seen as being irresponsive to the victims and families of Human Rights violations in the past.

Human Rights issues are usually deemed irrelevant in political and state practics. Moreover, it was getting worse since Law Number 27/2004 on Truth and Reconciliation Commission (KKR) had been revoked by the Constitutional Court.

“Since the law was removed, state’s commitments over the issues weakened,” said Director of the Institute for Policy Research and Advocacy (Elsam), Indriaswari Saptaningrum.

According to Indriaswari, lawmakers have admitted that the delayed settlement over severe Human Rights violations is a promise that has been fulfilled. “But, it's getting difficult to discuss with the government and lawmakers about the issue," Indriaswari said.
