VIVAnews – The Agency for Mount Kerinci and Seblat National Park (BBTNKS) records that 41,303 hectares of forest area are seriously damaged. for expansion and critical in that national park has damaged. The highest percentage of deforestatoion takes place in Jambi Province. 

“Ground check results and data updates show that forest damage reaches 28,255 hectares,” said Chief of National Park Area II of West Sumatra, John Askar, in Padang.

According to John, this particular damage of the national park occurs in four provinces: West Sumatra, Jambi, Bengkulu, and South Sumatra. In West Sumatera, the damage covers 3,520 hectares.

As for Bengkulu and South Sumatra, the damage level on each area reaches 6,470 hectares and 3,058 hectares. In West Sumatra, the damage which is in need of immediate rehabilitation is situated in Solok district at 185 hectares, South Solok district of 380 hectares, and Dharmasraya district of 500 hectares.

Forest degradation in the national park affects wild life. It is feared that it will also influence the Sumatera Tiger population living in the park.

No less than 25 percent of Sumatera Tiger population inhabits the area. Based on Forest Ministry's data, Sumatran Tiger population today remains only 400, 12 percent of the
entire tigers worldwide.

The national park all in all covers 1,389 million hectares of area extending in four Sumatra provinces, which is divided into six regional zones: main zone, wild zone, rehabilitation zone, utilization zone, special zone, and traditional zone. The main zone covers 53,6 percent of the total area.
