VIVAnews - The West Nusa Tenggara authorities arrested 60 gold miners in Olat Lemusung forest, Taliwang Subdistrict, West Sumbawa Regency.
Police confiscated 45 bags of stones, which allegedly contain gold, generator set, a blower crowbars and hammers.
Chief of West Nusa Tenggara Forestry Agency, Hartina, said the apprehension was carried out because the miners have cut trees to exploit the land.
Miners managed to dig hundreds of pits on three spots of Tanah MIra, Pakerun. "They were caught digging up the ground to seek rocks containing gold. The total area thay they exploited reached more than 3.5 hectares," said Hartina on Monday.
She claimed each hole hit a depth of more than four meters.
Early investigation shows that five men initialed MS, SD and JK (originated from Manado) and MT and SB of Sumbawa went through further queries.
Mars Anugerainsyah from the West Sumbawa forestry agency said there has been massive illegal mining in the area within the last six months.
Thousands of gold miners from various areas illegally entered restricted forest zones. Each group of miners, which commonly includes between 20 and 30 people, acquired 300 bags of stones worth Rp300 million per day.
