VIVAnews – The Goethe Institute and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom cooperating with Lingkar Survei Indonesia conducted an in-depth survey covering young Muslims in Indonesia.
The respondents were 1,496 Muslims between 15 and 25 years old from all provinces in Indonesia. They were asked about values, dreams and idealism in relation to life at the moment and in the future. One of the points of the research was their understanding of political affairs.
The survey results, obtained today by VIVAnews, show that only 28.6 percent of respondents are interested in politics, while 16.1 percent choose to participate in general election and 48 percent view politics as a tedious affair.
However, the survey also found that the respondents accept democratic values more. Over 70 percent of respondents are of the opinion that the people can replace the government that they do not desire. Meanwhile 66.3 percent say that the ongoing democracy requires opposition parties and 49 percent of Indonesian young Muslims accept the current political and economic conditions. Over 60 percent regard that Indonesia is on the right track.
In addition, they have doubts over political mechanisms, 66.7 percent see that graft and bribery have not yet decreased, while 62.6 percent say that politicians are only concerned with gaining the most votes in the next election.
In general, young Muslims in rural areas have an idealistic perspective on politics, tend to follow political processes and are more optimistic about Indonesia’s future compared to their counterparts in urban areas.
Young Muslims who have jobs and higher income are more in the position of not trusting the government compared to those who have less income.
