VIVAnews – The government estimated the amount of Indonesian migrant workers’ money transfer or remittance this year would not meet the target of Rp8 trillion.

It was signaled that this was triggered by the decision of moratorium or suspension of placing Indonesian workers in Saudi Arabia, which was responded by Saudi Arabian government’s stopping giving work permit.

“The policy of suspension to Saudi Arabia will have the impact of the decrease of Indonesian migrant workers’ remittance this year,” said Acting Director General of Worker Training and Placement of Manpower and Transmigration Ministry Reyna Usman told VIVAnews today.

Apart from that, the still-ongoing pandemonium of political map of Arabian countries also negatively influenced the Indonesian migrant workers’ remittance amount. This is because the Arabian countries are the largest Indonesian workers absorbers.

Reyna estimated this year’s remittance of Indonesian migrant workers from Saudi Arabia would not even exceed Rp6 trillion, from the 2011 target of Rp8 trillion.

In the mean time, Bank Indonesia’s data as of April 2011 has it that the largest remittance came from Malaysia, amounting to US$767.96 million, followed by Saudi Arabia US$759.03 million or around Rp6.54 trillion. Comes next is Taiwan with US$158.95 million and then Hong Kong US$151.87 million.

The total amount of remittance as of April 2011 was US$2.225 billion, slightly up compared to that of April 2010, US$2.222 billion. For a comparison, the total amount of remittance throughout 2010 was US$6.73 billion.

Saudi Arabia responded to the Philippines’ and Indonesia’s measure of informal worker placement suspension to the country. On Wednesday, June 28, 2011 local time Saudi Arabia announced stopping the work permit of domestic workers from the two countries.

As published in The Straits Times, June 30, 2011, the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Labour it would stop granting work visa effective starting Saturday, July 2, 2011. This was related to the claims filed by RI and Philippines.

“The Ministry of Labour will stop issuing work visas for domestic workers for Indonesia from Saturday (July 2),” said spokesperson of Saudi Ministry of Labour Hattab bin Saleh al-Anzi as quoted from Arab News.
