VIVAnews - The number of the poor in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta increased by 51,240, in line with the survey made by the Central Statistics Agency of Jakarta.

Earlier, the Jakarta administration recorded in March 2011 that the amount of poor populations in the city reached 363,420. While in March 2010, the number proves lower at 312,180 people of the poor.

The rise in poverty rate is caused by the increase in inflation recorded in the previous year. In March 2011, inflation hit 5.95 percent compared to March 2010 of 3.49 percent.

"Out of 9.6 million Jakarta populations, 3.75 percent or 363,420 people spend more than they could earn. In addition, the poor populations of Jakarta spend more money to buy food," said Agus.

Agus said that rice, kretek cigarettes, chicken and eggs are important commodities affecting poverty line. On the other hand, non-food commodities which affect poverty line include housing and electricity expenses, health treatment and education.
