VIVAnews - The Indonesian authorities are now focusing their searches of graft suspects on Muhammad Nazaruddin and Nunun Nurbaeti Daradjatun. Nazaruddin was named a suspect in the bribery case of athlete's dorm project, while Nunun was involved in the case of traveler's cheque graft with regard to the voting of Bank Indonesia senior deputy governor that Miranda Swaray Goeltom won in 2004.
However, the two are not the only fugitives. Legal Mafia Task Force Secretary Denny Indrayana said there are tens of people linked to graft cases who fled the country. "In the last ten years, there have been 45 corruptors who fled the country," he said in Surabaya, Thursday.
The figure Denny mentioned was in line with the Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW)'s data. The anti-NGO which is concerned over corruption has the data that out of 45 corruptors who ran away overseas, 20 chose Singapore as the hideout.
Both Nazaruddin and Nunun also made Singapore their destination. With the excuse of mental illness, Nunun was reportedly being treated in Singapore. So was Nazaruddin, who claimed of having medication for heart in the Merlion country.
According to Denny, fleeing corruptors are in fact a pitiful condition. However, it can also be concluded that Indonesia is no haven for corruptors. "That's why they escaped abroad," he said.
Citing the Failed State Index - the index of failed countries of which one of the parameters is corruption, Denny said that Indonesia's position is going up. In 2005, Indonesia was ranked 47th, while in 2011 64th. "This is a proof that the efforts of corruption eradication in Indonesia has been going on well," he said.
Denny viewed that the people are still pessimistic to see the progress. In fact, the progress is not as bad as that reported in the media.
By citing the results of Transparency Internationals' survey, Denny said, Indonesia's graft index rouse to 0.8. This number is considered the highest among ASEAN countries. "Compared to China, the country took tens of years," he stressed.
