VIVAnews – The Indonesian government needs additional sugar-cane plantation around 350,000 hectares to make possible national sugar self-sufficiency.

In order to acquire this area of land, the government eyes East Java, Central Java, Lampung, South Sumatra, Aceh, Sulawesi, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, North Maluku and Papua. “There are 10 areas in total,” said Coordinating Minister for the Economy Hatta Rajasa today.

Hatta said that for Merauke, the forestry minister has provided a permit of using the Merauke Integrated Food and Energy Estate (MIFEE) land plot of 37,000 hectares. Out of the designated area, said Hatta, the infrastructure, including factory, for 25,000 hectares is being prepared. “Eighteen sugar-cane plantation investors have obtained the needed concession from the regional government and are waiting for the provincial landscape planning,” he said.

In addition to Merauke, in Ogan Komering Ilir (OKI), South Sumatra, the government also provides an area of 29 hectares of land. “The principal permit for this has come from the Forestry Minister.”

Hatta said that the expansion of the sugar-cane plantation must be realized this year. This is because the preparation of the land and the seeds takes two years at the minimum, and two years also for building new sugar factories.
