VIVAnews – Indonesian Information and Communication Minister, Tifatul Sembiring, was listed by a web site as Indonesia's most popular politician in the cyber world, Tuesday.
Famecount.com, which considers Facebook, Twitter and YouTube presence, put Tifatul in 24th place for his 207,264 Facebook fans and 237,495 Twitter followers.
“I mostly tweet my thoughts in the car,” said Tifatul in a conversation with VIVAnews, Central Jakarta, Thursday.
Justice and Prosperous Party (PKS) Deputy Secretary General Mahfudz Siddiq said earlier that Tifatul’s popularity benefited the party. Before taking office as information and communication minister, Tifatul held the position of PKS president. Currently he is even still a member of the party’s consultative council. Mahfudz said that Tifatul could be a trend amid PKS young generation.
Does Tifatul intend to make use of his popularity in politics? Bearing in mind that in three years, in 2014, Indonesia will hold a general election. Some circles deemed that it is likely that Tifatul would run as president. Moreover, he has been notable due to his achievements as a minister in the last few years.
“I can't expect of becoming a President too much. But online president is not bad,” said Tifatul. He said that he was totally surprised to gain popularity in cyber world. “I was surprised and didn’t plan for it. But that is exactly what the social media is. I thank all my followers,” said Tifatul.
Nonetheless, he went on, “I didn’t really know the Netizens. Are they, for instance, real voters in the real world or not. That cannot be accounted.” He also stressed, “The point is I’m not conceited. In cyber world, everything is flat, equal. A minister is not in higher position than the others.”
