VIVAnews – The Upstream Oil and Gas Regulator (BP Migas) said in an opinion that the attempts to meet the demand of oil are focused on 256 new oil blocks. BP Migas also develops 32 new coal bed methane (CBM) blocks in collaboration with several foreign and national companies.
BP Migas Head of Public and Institutional Relations Elan Biantoro acknowledged the current national oil production is still below the target set at the State Budget.
The national oil production was only around 920,000 barrels a day. “We are required to produce 945,000 barrels a day,” said Elan in an interview with VIVAnews, Padang, Wednesday.
With the oil consumption amounting to 1.3 million barrels a day, the government still imports oil in order to meet the national demand. BP Migas believes that this condition would be overcome by 2014.
Elan was of the opinion that, for example, if Banyuurup and Bojonegoro oil fields of Cepu Block operate in maximum capacity, the production capacity would reach 165,000 barrels per day . “However, now the production is only 22,000 barrels a day,” he said.
He doubted that BP Migas’ inability to meet the national demand impacts the scarcity of fuels in some areas. He blamed oil speculators as being one of the many causes of fuel scarcity in the country.
Furthermore, he claimed the world’s oil price hike has affected the state budget. “Normally the Premium fuel price is Rp8,000 per liter and now the government gives as much subsidies as Rp3,500 per liter,” said Elan.
