A video released by Greenpeace shows an endangered Sumatran tiger in Indonesia dying a slow agonizing death seven days after being ensnared in a wild boar trap.

The environmental group said Tuesday the video was taken while a team from a local conservation agency in Riau province was trying to rescue the 18-month-old tiger on July 1, a week after it was trapped.

Greenpeace says rescuers tranquilized the tiger in the hope of saving it but it died hours later.

The footage shows the big cat struggling in vain to release its blackened paw from the rope traps.

Sumatran tigers are the world's most critically endangered tiger subspecies. Their numbers dwindled to about 400 from about 1,000 in the 1970s due to destruction of forests and poaching.
