VIVAnews – Jakarta Police Traffic Director Chief Comm. Royke Lumowa predicted that by 2014 Jakarta streets will be completely jammed. This could happen because so far there has not been any significant solution, as the vehicle-restricting regulation is not yet clear.

The consideration is, said Royke, around 700 new cars are on road in Jakarta everyday. This number will continue rising especially when car producers sell cars at cheaper price in order to meet their target.

“The regulation which limits new cars has not actually been made. If the government has a quick response, even a short-term rule can restrict private vehicles, for example by improving public transportation,” said Royke, Monday.

According to Royke, in order to anticipate the government’s prediction of Jakarta’s total congestion, an extreme policy is necessary.

Royke is of the opinion that the policy of restricting the operational hours of large vehicles alone is not sufficient to reduce traffic jam. Thus, there must be other supporting policy. Moreover, the policy must not only be implemented temporarily, but rather is applicable in five to ten years of period.

“We must learn from developed countries such as Japan, Korea and European countries, where the public hardly buy cars. They prefer using public transportation,” said Royke.

The color system policy is also deemed an alternative to solve traffic jams. According to the plan, random tests of this policy will be run in the near future.
