VIVAnews - The idea of disbanding the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) that House Speaker Marzuki Alie expressed several days earlier brings forth debates. A total of 75 universities joined in the Indonesian Integrity Education Network (I-IEN) encouraged the strengthening of the commission.
"The idea of deactivating the Commission is completely baseless taking into account it was encouraged by the parliament which has been considered most corrupt agency by some survey firms,” said a member of the I-IEN, Natalia Soebagio, on Wednesday, August 3.
According to Natalia, KPK’s role in the eradication of corruption is very significant. This is indicated by the disclosure of major cases which later on led to the reform of the crucial sectors in the realm of public policy.
"The efforts taken by KPK are very important in supporting the anti-corruption agenda set up by the Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono administration. KPK also plays an important role in correcting the corruption indicators such as the Corruption Perception Index and the Global Integrity Report," says Natalia who is also a researcher of the University of Indonesia (UI) Center for the Study of Governance.
The disbandment of the Commission, Natalia said further, will cause the loss of public confidence in the whole government which will automatically be a setback in the government’s anti-corruption agenda.
In addition, it can also lead to increasingly high graft rates which will impact on the rising inefficiency in the state budget sector and poor public service. All of these ultimately create adversity and poverty.
The coalition also asked Yudhoyono’s government to provide political support to the work of KPK. It also asked for as widely a space as possible for the KPK to conduct a systemic diagnosis into the government agencies and develop the necessary instruments to control over grafts in government.
"We also call on the House of Representatives to provide political support for the execution of KPK’s tasks and enhance the prevention systems in the Parliament so that political grafts can be identified early by the Parliament and the image of the people's representative institutions can be improved," she said.
