VIVAnews - Justice and Human Rights Minister Patrialis Akbar said the government will give remission to more than 30,000 inmates in the event of national Independence Day this year.
"Around 1,900 (inmates) will be released right away while as for another 29,000, their eligibility is still evaluated," said Patrialis on Thursday, August 11.
The figure, said Patrialis, was derived from 24 regional offices. The figure is not yet final as more data from nine different offices will be submitted any time soon. The National Mandate Party (PAN) politician estimated that around 33,000 inmates would receive remissions this year.
Patrialis explained, any kinds of inmates on as different charges as drug, corruption, and terrorism are also singled out to receive the Independence Day remission. "They can only be granted pardon with strict requirements," he said. However, Patrialis has yet to have in hand list of names of remission recipients.
When asked about Antasari Azhar, convicted of a murder case on Putra Rajawali Banjaran’s director M Nasrudin, he said, "Pak Antasari was jailed of murder case. I think he will get one.". According to him, a prisoner can receive remission if he or she has served 9 months in prison.
Gayus Tambunan, convict of tax manipulation case, who was sentenced to 12 years of imprisonment, according to him, will also get the remission as he is not considered "convict of corruption case."
According to Patrialis, all inmates are entitled to be granted remission. This, he said, is ruled in the government regulation on remission.
