VIVAnews - The government will readjust the quota of beef and cattle import for the coming year.

Agriculture Minister Suswono said the government will only import beef or cattle if the domestic supply is insufficient to meet the national demand. The government will carry out a cattle census which will be used as the indicator for imports.

"We will later break it down in order to identify the potential ability of domestic supply, which we will calculate carefully. The shortcomings will be made for imports," he said today.

According to the plan, the beef imports will be reduced by 30,000 tons in 2011. The imports of beef would be 90,000 tons this year, while in 2010 it amounted to 120,000 tons. As for cattle, it will be cut down from 600,000 to 500,000. "We will continue decreasing it," he went on.

To support this, more detailed census on cows is required in calculating the potential ability of the country. Then, the government will draft a new roadmap to achieve self-sufficiency in beef.
