VIVAnews – It is believe that the general public can still bear the plan of electricity rate (TDL) hike by 10 percent in 2012. The government said the increase in TDL aims at making the subsidy more efficient.
Gadjah Mada University (UGM) economist, Tony Prasetiantono, said the impact of revised electricity rate will not contribute much to the national inflation.
"I assume it will boost inflation by less than 1 percent," Tony told VIVAnews in Jakarta, Monday.
The UGM Head of the Center for Economic and Public Policy Studies said the government still have space to mull over the perfect timing for the hike. Tony stated that it is best for the government to remodel the electricity tariff during months of low inflation rates, "such as April."
Suggestion has it that electricity tariff revision will no coincide with the planned readjustment of subsidized fuel prices.
"So, people won't take 'double blows'," he said.
Earlier, Coordinating Minister for the Economy Hatta Rajasa explained that the plan to increase electricity by 10 percent in 2012 is to make rooms for of electricity subsidy. In the future, electricity subsidies will be allocated to fill out PLN power plants.
Given the electricty reach of 60 precent across the nation, more power plants will in turn help more people to get access to electricity.
