VIVAnews - Victims of Mt. Merapi eruption, who until now have yet to be fully recovered from burn injury, must pay between Rp800,000 to Rp1.2 million for outpatient-basis treatment at the hospital. Whereas earlier, patients who were yet to have fully healed were said to be guaranteed on treatment expenses by the government through the public health insurance program.
"Two of my children who were exposed to hot clouds until now still have go for control. However, every time we have medical check-up in Sardjito Yogyakarta Hospital, they would charge us between Rp800,000 and Rp1.2 million," said Bejo Mulyo, village chief of Umbulharjo, Cangkringan, Sleman, Yogyakarta.
Those who must pay the cost of hospital control are not only his two children, but also other residents who also go for outpatient-basis treatment.
"While being an inpatient for two months due to burn injuries, we didn't have to pay. But the hospital would charge us during check-ups," explained Bejo.
Bejo's two children were sent to the aesthetics department of Sardjito Hospital because they were already physically able to perform daily activities. However, they would still have to have their fingers and toes closely examined.
Meanwhile, Sardjito Yogyakarta Hospital Public Relations staff, Banu Hernawan stated that all patients who have been affected by the Merapi eruption are free of charge on medical control. Nonetheless, the aesthetics treatment is actually not aimed at hot clouds patients.
"The aesthetics department targets patients who are willing to have cosmetic surgery. Therefore, patients from Merapi eruption must pay for the such a treatment," said Banu.
Meanwhile, Head of Health Bureau of Sleman Regency, Mafilindati Nuraini said if the patients have already checked their health at the aesthetics department and spent a lot of money, they can ask for health social assistance to the Health Bureau.
"It is guaranteed that control treatment in the plastic surgery department for the patients from Merapi eruption would be free of charge," said Mafilindati.
