VIVAnews - Seven years ago on September 7, 2004, Indonesian human rights activist Munir Said Thalib died of arsenic poisoning on board a Garuda Indonesia Airways flight to Amsterdam. Judges had sentenced Pollycarpus Budihari Priyanto 20 years of imprisonment for murdering Munir. However, the man behind the untimely death of the activist has never been revealed.

Prior to the commemoration of Munir's death, Amnesty International has sent a letter to Attorney General, Basrief Arief, requesting the institution to proceed with the investigation into the case.

"Amnesty International is concerned over the handling of Munir's death, which is considered untransparent and unaccountable, and has caused any defender of human rights in the country to feel anxious," said Josef Roy Benedict, member of Amnesty International campaign for Indonesia and Timor Leste.

Amnesty sees the case as a preliminary warning over all human rights activists that they lives may continuously be in danger.

"This is a terrifying threat to human rights defenders in Indonesia. The reason for this is that it is likely that anyone held responsible for violating human rights - name it torture, killing or abduction - gains impunity," he said.

The Indonesian government is obligated to set out fair and transparent trial on any human rights violator in line with the standards of the international law.
