VIVAnews – Indonesia's Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro received a courtesy visit of South Korean Defense Minister HE Gen. Kim Kwan-Jin.
The meeting was on the occasion of discussing defense cooperation between Indonesia and South Korea, especially in the primary defense equipment.
One of the defense equipments in the discussion includes the fighter aircraft which is produced jointly between Indonesia and South Korea. "The fighter aircrafts in question are 10 KF-X/IF-X type, of which five were made domestically, while the remaining were made in Korea," Purnomo said.
Indonesia's Defense Ministry presented a CN-235 aircraft replica to the South Korean Defense Minister.
Purnomo also receive a replica of South Korean-made fighter jet, T-50, that the Indonesian government plans to purchase.
Indonesia plans to buy as many as 16 T-50 aircrafts from South Korea. The price will be determined later in future negotiations. According to aircraftcompare.com page, the unit price of this aircraft reaches US$21 million or about Rp179.9 billion. According to the media in South Korea, the South Korean government will buy Indonesian-made CN-235 aircrafts if the Yudhoyono’s government buys up T-50.
South Korea's Defense Minister Kim Kwan-Jin acknowledged being very pleased to be cooperating with Indonesia. Besides being able to share knowledge and latest technology, the meeting also helped the formation of Indonesia’s national defense in order to be competitive with other countries. "Cooperation with Indonesia should be prolonged, particularly regarding the field of fighter aircraft," he said.
During the meeting the memorandum of understanding (MoU) on defense industry was signed by South Korean Director General of Force Policy Bureau, Lee Yong Dae and Indonesia's Director General of Potential Security, Pos Hutabarat.
