VIVAnews – The government is ready to disburse funds amounting to Rp3 trillion to anticipate drought due to weather changes.

“The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) estimates that dry season would last until late October or early November. The fund is readied to expect short and long-term disasters,” said Coordinating Minister for People’s Welfare, Agung Laksono in Jakarta, today.

He said some places in Indonesia are under clean water shortage. Priorities should be set up to avoid further unexpected impacts.

The government advises that water be used efficiently.

“The campaign will not only be run in drought-ridden areas, but also in the areas which still have a lot of water in store, including the northern coast of Java,” said Agung.

The government will also call on the people to seek new springs by digging wells by using weather modification technology or artificial rain.

“Besides anticipating forest fire as carried out in South Sumatra the other day, artificial rain is also aimed at drought areas. Artificial rain is not done in all areas, the cost is quite expensive,” he said.

In the long run, the government prepares food diversification program, water management planning which take the benefits of river water body, as well as cooperation in reforestation act.

The government, through the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), will also set up a roadmap of disaster-prone areas. The map will have red, yellow and green symbols which indicate the level of drought in the areas during dry season.
