VIVAnews – An economist at PT Bank Danamon Tbk, Anton Gunawan is of the opinion that Bank Indonesia (BI) must pay attention to possible tranfer of stock ownership should the authorities set restriction on foreign majority share in local banks.

“This is like a two-bladed knife. The aim would be that of GSG (good corporate governance). But there is another thing. What if foreign ownership in a bank reaches 90 percent? The owners would be concerned as the bank will have tighter space for business,” he said.

In the mean time, the situation may lead to cross-ownership in which the transition toward smaller foreign ownership will be poorer.

BI chief researcher of Banking Research and Regulation Directorate, Suhaedi, said the Indonesian central bank must not issue different regulations on majority stock ownership of either foreign or local banks.
