VIVAnews – Chairman of Indonesia's Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), KH Said Aqil Siradj expected that peace in Ambon, Maluku, following the clash which claimed the lives of five several days ago can be maintained.
Said Aqil also called on all parties to contribute to better Ambon so as to prevent more clashes from taking place in the area.
“Hopefully, that was the last clash in place. There mustn’t be any more rioting in Ambon. Let’s help each other so that Ambon will always be safe,” Said Aqil said on Tuesday.
Peace is possible if all conflicting groups remain sitting on the fence.
“In order to make Ambon safe, it is not enough that only those involved in conflicts that can give the go by. All elements of the society, including those living outside of Ambon, have to keep their eyes on Ambon,” he said.
Another important issue Said Aqil conveyed regarding the hope for safe Ambon is to foster religious tolerance.
“It is good that NU followers can lend their hands. This will improve NU’s image as a civil group promoting that Islam is peaceful,” he said.
